September 2025 Update

Enjoying the change of seasons

September 2025 Update
Roasted hazelnuts being shelled (via hammer??)

It's starting to feel like fall almost exactly on time! We're winding down our summer plans and starting to prepare for winter. Read on for what we've been up to and how you can get involved.

Events, upcoming

The next few months will continue to be on the lighter side as we deal with many simultaneous home improvement challenges and several new community members moving in. However, we've got two updates:

  • We're trying out a new movie screening series where we watch weird, cult, and horror movies while enjoying a wholesome home-cooked meal. This is a "friends only" event series, but please get in touch if it sounds like your kinda thing!
  • We're not opening our Q3 planning meeting to the public as we're behind schedule on it; but our Q4 planning meeting is announced. You should attend if you're interested in finances, governance, and other kinds of long term planning.
RSVP to MALT Q4 (Winter) Quarterly Planning Meeting | Partiful
MALT is an in-formation Community Land Trust. We have been operating as an intentional community for 6 years, and holding Quarterly Meetings for 2 years as we prepare for non-profit incorporation. At the meeting we will discuss our membership structure, financial updates, bylaws drafting, and work on our social media presence. We’re still working on our member signup process, but our meetings are always open to interested guests. The venue is a private residence in Malden. The indoors area is not wheelchair accessible due to a raised lot and narrow doors. We are directly on several bus lines, a 15-20 minute walk from Malden Center station (Orange Line), and have convenient street parking.

Openings, filled

We've had a few new community members join since last update, and are interviewing several other candidates. At this time, we expect that we'll be able to fill all of our current openings.

However, we're always looking to meet interesting people who could be a good fit for this community in the future. Our current priority is to find new members with skills relevant to managing collective housing, and who could see themselves staying for at least several years. If you think this sounds like you or one of your friends, please start a conversation! We'd love to invite you to some events and get to know each other.

Our website's "Housing" page will always have the most up-to-date info on what's available and what we're looking for:

Housing
Come live at one of MALT’s houses!

Please feel free to forward our housing page, or this email, to a friend or to another mailing list. We're especially open to working with people planning to relocate to Massachusetts.

Walls, demolished

If you've visited MALT for any of our indoor events - like community meals or poetry readings - you might've visited our "community floor". This currently consists of a living room, dining room, kitchen, and bathroom that are largely reserved for event hosting. Unfortunately, this floor was significantly damaged after a water leak - we included some photos of the carnage in our last monthly update.

We've been working with our insurance company on coverage, and we've selected a general contractor for restoring the space. We're looking at some significant changes to improve the space for hosting and improve environmental sustainability:

  • Knocking down a wall to enable table seating for >20 people
  • Adding a flexible pocket door or curtain rod so we can reconfigure the space
  • Converting from gas to a extra-sized induction stove
  • Improving stovetop ventilation
  • Adding a second sink basin and/or dishwasher
  • Refinishing our laundry room and adding a new storage room
  • Converting to an efficient heat pump combination washer/dryer

Do you have cool ideas about how to reconfigure the space to make it more interesting? Let us know!

Produce, harvested

When we bought the houses several years ago, we immediately planted a lot of fruit trees and berry bushes. Some of those are now just starting to hit maturity. For the first time, our hazelnuts produced - we only got a handful this time, but they'll be quite prolific when they're fully grown.

Our columnar apple trees have produced in prior years, but this was our first time getting a solid quantity. We picked about a dozen apples this year and made a delicious apple crisp - with port and ancho! (Would you buy a co-op cookbook? Let us know!)

Until next time

We hope you're having an awesome September. This website and mailing list are still new to us, so please reach out if you have any feedback for us.
