Holiday happenings

We're about to enter holiday season, and that usually means a quieter period for the community. But we do have a few upcoming events:

  • On Saturday Nov 29th we'll be hosting a harvest potluck. This one is also "friends only", but we're still figuring out the details; please reach out if you're interested.
  • We're trying out a new movie screening series where we watch weird, cult, and horror movies while enjoying a wholesome home-cooked meal. This is a "friends only" event series, but please get in touch if it sounds like your kinda thing!
    • There's only one more announced: The Thing (1982) on Saturday, December 20th. We'll be expanding the schedule early next year once we know more about our construction timeline.
  • Our Q4 planning meeting will take place in December. You should attend if you're interested in finances, governance, and other kinds of long term planning.
RSVP to MALT Q4 (Winter) Quarterly Planning Meeting | Partiful
MALT is an in-formation Community Land Trust. We have been operating as an intentional community for 6 years, and holding Quarterly Meetings for 2 years as we prepare for non-profit incorporation. At the meeting we will discuss our membership structure, financial updates, bylaws drafting, and work on our social media presence. We’re still working on our member signup process, but our meetings are always open to interested guests. The venue is a private residence in Malden. The indoors area is not wheelchair accessible due to a raised lot and narrow doors. We are directly on several bus lines, a 15-20 minute walk from Malden Center station (Orange Line), and have convenient street parking.
  • We're probably not doing a Winter Solstice event this year, but watch out for next year!

Finally, this isn't our event, but we wanted to boost that Food Not Bombs Malden is hosting a community meal in downtown Malden on Saturday Nov. 29th:

Two open rooms

We've added a second room to our current vacancies. Our current priority is to find new members with skills relevant to managing collective housing, and who could see themselves staying for at least several years. If you think this sounds like you or one of your friends, please start a conversation! We'd love to invite you to some events and get to know each other.

Our website's "Housing" page will always have the most up-to-date info on what's available and what we're looking for:

Housing
Come live at one of MALT’s houses!

Please feel free to forward our housing page, or this email, to a friend or to another mailing list. We're especially open to working with people planning to relocate to Massachusetts.

Construction challenges

Our last update in October featured some samples from our designer. We've continued to make selections and move the work along; but there have been a lot of unanticipated difficulties working with our contractor. At this point we don't have a start date for construction, even though the damage happened in July and we paid the deposit in early October.

However, we are really pleased with the new layout we've designed:

We've played a very active role in picking design elements suitable to a high-traffic, cooking-oriented kitchen:

  • Commercial-style induction oven for cooking large meals
  • High quality ventilation to reduce heat and smoke
  • Large continguous counter space for prepping and serving
  • Detached extra-width sink and dishwasher optimized for party traffic flow
  • Glass fronted cabinets to make finding plates easier for guests
  • Microwave niche to keep counters as clear as possible
  • Widened entryways to the living room and bathroom to reduce congestion

We're really excited to use this kitchen to host a variety of types of events, and we'll definitely do something special to break in the new space. Expect to hear more about that as we get closer.
