Making ethical choices

A lot of research went into publishing MALT's blog and mailing list. One of the reasons we went with Ghost over something more common like Substack, is that the latter directly profits from (and in turn, distributes funds to) Nazis and race scientists. We do not always have the luxury of picking our vendors, but in this case the choice was obvious for a mission-oriented project.

Ghost has just been recognized as a "digital public good", since the source code is available open source (though we do happily pay for the premium hosted version). You can read more about what that means here:

Ghost is now a digital public good
Ghost has been reviewed and is now recognized by the Digital Public Goods Alliance (DPGA) as a digital public good. The DPGA is a multi-stakeholder initiative endorsed by the United Nations Secretary-General, working to promote open source software, open data, and open content that contributes to the attainment of the

Continuing cooking

With the warming weather, we've been getting back into the swing of communal cooking. In fact, if weather holds this weekend will be the first smoker run of the season!

For now, check out some recent meals we've made, including salmon with homegrown mushrooms and a pasta primavera made with our own garden vegetables.

Nearing the end

The past year at MALT has been challenging with ongoing disruption from unexpected major construction. Unfortunately, this project has been delayed at several points. Most recently, we received the tragic news that a key member of the project was affected by ICE's reckless and racist deportation agenda.

We are opposed to this administration on moral grounds, but all of these illegal policies have practical impacts as well. The disruption has cost this single project months of time and thousands of dollars - now imagine that repeated across entire industries with no notice or recourse. It's no wonder that people feel that the economy is no longer working.

However, we're making the most of these challenging circumstances and moving ahead. Most of the drywall and tile is up, and next will be the cabinets and countertops. We expect construction to be largely complete by the end of May, and to have furnished rooms by the end of June. Hopefully that means you'll see a summer party invite arriving soon!

Get your hands dirty

We often get asked if we have any way for people to get involved around the properties, and especially a lot of people want to learn about gardening. We'd be happy to have you hang with us, get some exercise and some sun, and have an excuse for eating pizza after. If that sounds like fun, come on by one of these dates in May:

Saturday, May 9·10:00am – 12:00pm
Saturday, May 16·12:00 – 2:00pm
Saturday, May 23·12:00 – 2:00pm

If you're already a garden pro, we'll be working on some projects like pulling up black swallowwort or trimming the hedges. But even if you've got a black thumb there's options like remulching the pathway, scraping and repainting, or trash picking.

For those who want to stay indoors, you can expect to see some dates for post-construction unpacking and decorating on some weekends in June. The damage to the property was on short notice, which means we've got an entire kitchen's worth of supplies that needs cleaning, sorting, and re-stocking.

See you (later in) May!
